Courses of Study

“I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge

Colossians 2:2-3 NLT

Every course of study in our curriculum fits into one of nine broad and somewhat broad categories that are unified and informed by our knowledge of Christ “the Word” (Colossians 1:17; 2 Peter 3:18; John 1:1). Each is essential but not necessarily of equal importance. Some require more time to learn and master; others may need just a few minutes here and there. Organizing our curriculum into these nine categories helps me to think through what we should and could be covering as well as to evaluate the current school year and plan for the next. Every year my perception of how these fields of discovery fit together shifts a bit. Below is the current iteration.

  • Memory & Recitation (catechism)
  • Religion & Philosophy (worldview)
  • Grammar & Rhetoric (language arts)
  • Mathematics & Measurement (number arts)
  • Science & Nature (physical sciences)
  • History & Society (social sciences)
  • Languages & Literature (tradition)
  • Fine Arts & Performance (culture)
  • Wisdom & Virtue (spiritual, personal, and family life)

Of particular help in sorting out the classical christian curriculum is The Liberal Arts Tradition: A Philosophy of Christian Classical Education by Dr. Kevin Clark and Ravi Scott Jain.
